Top Five Favorite Sofas for the Holidays
Winter is Coming… In fact, it’s nearly here! Just a couple more weeks until it’s officially snow season, and with that comes the holidays! This is a busy, bustling time, and while the holidays may look a bit different this year, we still have a lot to celebrate. This year has been a long one for all of us. Between a global pandemic, an election, and so much more, it’s crazy to think we are nearing the end of 2020. One of the most challenging, life-changing years some of us have experienced is coming to an end. Now we get to see what 2021 will have in store for us! What are your plans for the Holidays? Now let’s not get ahead of ourselves thinking about next year, and everything it will bring. We can’t forget about the last few weeks of the year and everything that comes with the Winter season! Whatever your holidays may look like, new furniture for the holidays should be on everyone’s wish list! This year more than most showed us the importance of being comfortable in your own home. Surrounding yourself with items you love is important in times like these. Spending time at home is the new night out on the town (literally), and that dusty old couch that used to be “just fine” no longer makes the cut. What sounds better than a gorgeous new sofa just in time for the holidays? Whether you plan to spend the holidays with your dog, your family, or by yourself, a super comfy sofa from Wallaroos is waiting for an invitation to join the fun! In this blog post, we’ll be going over our top five favorite sofas for the holiday season. A holiday sofa wish list just for you Starting off your Wish List with one of our favorites, the Vincent luxury u-shaped sectional! The Vincent is a large, low-profile, kid-friendly sectional. This sofa has been kid-tested and approved, (we may have had a bit of fun with some fort building). While The Vincent is perfect for families, it doesn’t sacrifice style or aesthetic. It’s the type of sofa that can fit in any home, whether your style is modern and sleek or country chic! Next up on the list is the Bliss Section-L sectional sofa! The Bliss comes in two sizes, the larger Luxe, and the smaller Petite. Both are roomy and plush. The modular design is versatile and can be arranged in many different ways, allowing space for a Christmas tree if you’re struggling to find the room! With memory foam cushions and a down top, The Bliss is crazy comfortable, and perfect for snuggling up in a blanket on a cold winter morning. A personal favorite, the Cracken, a European reclining sectional sofa also finds its place on our top five favorite sofas for the holiday season! If you’re looking for a sleek, modern sofa, this is the one! The Cracken is a euro-style lounge sectional. The backrests are adjustable! You sit upright in a seated position, or lay back and lounge comfortably. When you need a place to digest after a big holiday meal, the Cracken will invite you right in. Maybe you don’t have space for a huge sofa in your home, well we’ve got you covered there too! The Maxwell is a small L-shaped sectional sofa and is perfect for smaller homes or apartments. It’s one of our FAVORITE petite sectionals, and still is so comfortable and classy! And lastly, the Barbados oversized luxury sectional sofa. Mid-Century Modern Furniture at Wallaroo’s
Is there anyone who doesn’t LOVE beautiful, functional pieces of furniture? We highly doubt it. If we ever meet someone that says, “Yes, I love ugly, useless furniture,” we’ll need to have a chat. But for the rest of the world, there’s Wallaroo’s line of Mid-Century Modern furniture. You’ve likely heard the term “Mid-Century Modern” while talking about architecture and interior design, but you might not know how it relates to furniture. Follow along to read how Mid-Century Modern design principles guide us at Wallaroos! The Origins of Mid-Century Modern Design Often shortened to “MCM” (no, I’m not talking about “Man Crush Monday” on Instagram), this design movement came into fashion after WWII. It’s an American design movement sparked by Bauhaus architects from Germany who migrated to the States after the war. While Mid-Century Modern design has a retro feel, due to its heavy influence from the pop-art and space-age icons of the ’50s, it values the function and simplicity required for modern living. Is Mid-Century Modern just a catch-all term for everything designed from the ’40s-’60s? No, it’s actually quite specific in its style and aesthetic. And it’s never been more popular. The movement is characterized by clean lines, geometric patterns, simplicity, and functionality. A Mid-Century Modern space will feature an open floor plan and large, sleek furniture. The uncluttered, open feel of Mid-Century Modern spaces is due in part to new home-buyers’ desires post-WWII. In the ’50s, young families desired change. They want to move away from the overstuffed, ornamental, spaces they grew up in. Mid-Century Modern was, and still is, a refreshing change from designs of the past. MCM Influence on Wallaroo's Design Mid-Century Modern pieces will forever have a place here at Wallaroo’s Furniture and Mattresses. The simplistic, to-the-point nature of Mid Century-Modern design makes it an excellent fit for Wallaroo’s. Our down-to-earth values and easy-going attitude coincide with those of Mid-Century Modernism. Sure, we have some pretty lofty goals in the Furniture game, but they’re always rooted in practicality. MCM designers are a major influence on Bailee, Walalroo’s co-owner, designer, and Mid-Century Modern enthusiast. In particular, Herman Miller has been a major inspiration. Bailee had this to say about Herman Miller: “I dislike chincey, extraneous detail on furniture, or anything really. Herman Miller was known for his office and waiting room furniture. He designed commercial furniture that needed to stand the test of time. It needed to look good while getting the job done. I want to bring the same principles and values to our customers.” On top of filling her own home with Mid-Century Modern furniture, she regularly researches and designs new pieces to add to the Wallaroo’s family. And yeah, she’s owned a few Herman Miller pieces in her day. Frank Lloyd Wright and Wallaroo's The Jackie was Wallaroo’s first original Mid-Century Modern design. Featuring angled, solid wood legs, the Jackie has a sturdy base with a simple, clean design. The Jackie sofa is truly beautiful, but no part of it is embellished or unnecessary. Its simple, effective design needs no further embellishment. Though, we must say, the Teal version really pops. The Wright is one of our best selling Mid-Century Modern designs. Named after the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, it has a functional, elegant design. It features a simple silhouette and to-die-for angled legs. Frank Loyd Wright designed everything from churches to atomic family starter homes. We find his work anywhere and everywhere. In the same way, the Wright can find itself in a high-rise apartment, a waiting room, or even the sitting room of one of Spokane’s fabulous Mid-Century homes. One of Wallaroo’s newest additions to the Mid-Century Modern family is The Atlas. The Atlas is a gorgeous, top-grain leather sectional. With the classic, mid-century modern tapered legs, a simple silhouette, and wide chaise, the Atlas is a gorgeous mid-century modern option for those leather lovers out there. Mid-Century Modern Furniture and Our Mission Wallaroo’s mission is to offer high-quality, beautiful pieces to everyone. There’s no exception for our Mid-Century Modern furniture pieces. We are continuously shopping around for the best deals for our customers, without foregoing quality materials. We strive to offer the best value of furniture in the PNW, and we certainly maintain that claim. Mid-Century Modern furniture will always have a place at Wallaroo’s, and will always be pieces we are proud to sell. Wallaroo’s In-House Marketing Team: Making Cool Commercials
Having an in-house marketing team isn’t the industry standard for the furniture business. Luckily for all of us, Wallaroo’s is all about disrupting the industry standard to improve the lives of our customers. As the newest division at Wallaroo’s, our in-house marketing team frequently finds themselves faced with unpredictable challenges. From harsh weather–like rain or smoke–canceling shoots to keeping our content on schedule with our supply chain, we’re constantly on our toes, bouncing around, staying balanced like the Wallaroos we are. We’re stoked to announce that, despite setbacks like these, we just completed a beautiful, heartwarming, commercial for the Wallaroo’s Cool line of mattresses. While it won’t be released until mid-Winter, we wanted to give some insight into the project and why we’re so proud of it. The foundations for this project were laid back in February of 2020 and took months to come to fruition. Back in February, it would have been impossible to achieve this level of production. It’s truly humbling to see how our in-house marketing team has grown in under a year. The in-house Marketing Team plans for Months The origins of this project reach back to February, when we had an offer to work with a high-end, luxury brand of mattresses. They were looking for a West Coast distributor and we were in the running. To sweeten the deal, they offered a large sum for a marketing budget and our in-house marketing team fell in love with their marketing materials. However, after much debate, Nathan and Bailee decided the price point wasn’t right for our customers. Further, the brand wanted to take up space in our stores with dedicated displays for their products. That would harsh our vibes substantially. However, Bailee was artistically #inspired by one of their videos, which showcased their mattresses in a sexy, luxurious desert scene. She loved the visual aesthetic and wanted to make something that had a similar vibe, but was family and PNW focused. However, that wasn’t in the cards at the time, so the idea was left to stew in her head. Designed with the Whole Family in Mind After a few months, our in-house marketing team evolved, as Taylor grew into his position as Head of Marketing and began developing our team of young professionals. Shortly after, Tiffany joined as our Social Media Manager, bringing along her impressive skills as a video producer. As the team grew and production became more important, we welcomed Wes, of Hyper-Tuna Productions to our team as our videographer. Paired with Bailee’s close friend and honorary Wallaroo, photographer Alicia Hauff, we’d grown into a fully realized in-house marketing team. With all these team members in place, we were ready to actualize Bailee’s vision for this product shoot. In late July, we began to discuss producing content to support the return of the Wallaroo’s Cool and Black mattress. At the time, they were scheduled to return to us by October (more on that later!). Bailee brought the video that inspired her back to the table and we began planning the shoot. She knew of an ideal location from her conversations with a customer, so we started scheming. We realized quickly that the location was beautiful and would be a great place to double up on some beautiful Palouse product shoots. Making the BIG Decisions with the In-House Marketing Team First, we decided which products to include in the shoot. We knew our main focus was going to be the Wallaroo’s Cool and Wallaroo’s Black mattresses. But, we also wanted some great photos of items like the Pet-Friendly Yoko and our best-selling U-shaped sectional The Vincent. Once we had settled on 4-6 products to photograph, we were ready to get to the nitty-gritty. Our next planning phase was to figure out how to get these massive sofas to our shoot locations. We went 30 minutes up the Palouse, so this was no easy task! The in-house marketing team coordinated with our warehouse manager Bob and our moving team to figure out the logistics of when and where we needed certain products. However, the date and location did quite a bit of shifting around! First, we had to cancel because of rain, then because of the devastating wildfires in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. In Spokane, we had 3-4 days of hazardous air quality in September 2020. Naturally, we had our shoot scheduled right in the middle. Planning Makes Perfect...Well, it Helps, kind of... Since we had a 5-7 hour shoot planned outdoors, complete with new furniture, an in-house marketing team, a moving crew, and a family with a baby, we had to pivot. Since no one knew when the smoke would clear, we came up with a contingency plan. We had a lot riding on this shoot and a lot of moving parts in the air. Bailee and Nathan are currently renovating their home, but had just enough space to set up two rooms to shoot the indoor scenes. When the smoke cleared, we could return to the Palouse for the outdoor shoots! We really didn’t want to give up on the Palouse idea, because our good friend Jess of Jess Nichole Interiors graciously agreed to let us use her incredible property. She lives out on the Palouse in a gorgeous home overlooking 13 acres of black walnut trees and wheat. It was the dreamiest backdrop for encompassing the PNW aesthetic. That's a Wrap! (for now...) Finally, the day of our first shoot came and it couldn’t have gone better. We captured gorgeous content of our model family Juan, Isabel, and Leon Chona living it up on the Wallaroo’s Mattress. We are so excited to show you the footage, because it’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. The team brought our visions for the product and lifestyle shoots to life and the photos turned out amazing. Once the smoke cleared we were able to get everyone out on the Palouse to capture gorgeous footage of our furniture and the new mattresses.

A U-Shaped Sectional Sofa that’s Kid Friendly?
Bouncing, blowouts, spills, and crumbs. If you have kids, you know what I’m talking about. Some parents make furniture “kid friendly” with plastic covers to protect it from the “little angels”. Some parents put fashion over function, by opting to keep the kids out of the living room. What really makes furniture kid-friendly? And can it be good looking at the same time? Striking balance between form and function IS possible and, at Wallaroo’s, you can do it without breaking the bank! How? I know you’re on the edge of your seat. Well, let’s talk about The Vincent, our U-shaped sectional sofa that keeps everyone happy, safe, and stain free. What makes kid friendly furniture kid friendly? At Wallaroo’s, durability comes to mind. We all know toddlers are just tiny drunk adults. They have spills. They puke at inconvenient time. We never really know what they’re saying and most everything they do is unpredictable. You need furniture that will stand the test of time, clean easily, and won’t have you rushing to buy a sofa cover after 3 months. A Safe U-Shaped Sectional Sofa Whether you have babies, toddlers, or 13-going on 30 teens, you want your furniture to account for bouncing, rolling, falling, climbing and all those other -ing verbs kids like to do. Something low profile (and conveniently stylish) will add to the “kid friendly”-ness of an item. A piece that is sturdy and bottom heavy. A piece that won’t tip over, no matter who decides to climb up the back of the sofa when mom isn’t looking. Sturdy and durable furniture is important with kids in the house. A furniture tip over can happen anytime something large becomes unbalanced. 67 percent of child tip-over fatalities since 2000 involved children between 1 and 3.5 years old. As little ones become mobile and curious, it’s important to take into account having kid friendly pieces in your home. It’s so widely talked about that the CSPC did a campaign called “Anchor It!” encouraging parents to anchor any furniture that a little explorer might try to climb. You can read more about “Anchor It” here https://www.anchorit.gov/why-anchor-it/. Finding something durable and sturdy that’s also stylish was our mission, and here’s how we did it! Designed with the Whole Family in Mind When designing The Vincent, our top selling U-shaped sectional sofa, we took these factors into consideration. We wanted something low profile, a sleek silhouette, and small legs that would blend into any home. Whether the aesthetic was modern or straight out of a Magnolia magazine farmhouse, we wanted something that could chameleon its way into any home. We knew it needed to have a chaise for lounging and napping and high quality insides that made this sectional uber comfy. At Wallaroo’s, we believe in giving our customer options AND #hotdealzzz. We made The Vincent modular, so you could choose a left facing or right facing chaise. We wanted you to have plenty of options for colors, so it comes in Black, Oatmeal, Light Grey, and Navy. AND it’s only $1499. A price that can’t be beat. It’s such a hot deal you can totally afford all those trips to the movies, the trampoline park, the water park, road trips to grandma’s house, diapers, toys, holiday presents, and the endless supply of new clothes your child has made it their full time job to keep outgrowing. Live the Dream Once we had the dream sectional in our heads, we decided this sofa also needed plenty of kid friendly features as well. With a kiln dried hardwood base, The Vincent is a sturdy U-shaped sectional sofa. Building from the ground up, it has pocketed coils that make up the insides of the base and give it just the right bounce. Memory foam makes up the tush-cush (cushions for your tush, trademark pending..) and leave you feeling comfortable and supported. To top it off, The Vincent has durable linen fabric that is stain resistant and easy to clean. Cue the, “Daaaaddddd!! I spilled!” Anytime we make a new product at Wallaroo’s, we stain test the fabric and see how well it stands up against some crowd favorites like hot sauce, red wine, and chocolate milk. It’s not a perfect science, but you can check out how we do it on our highlight reel on our instagram page @Wallaroosfurniture! Fabric testing is a critical step when making kid-friendly furniture. Perfect for Our Family and Yours The Vincent holds a special place in our heart at Wallaroo’s, because it’s named after Nathan and Bailee’s first child, Vincent. (If you’re friends, you can call him Vinny.) This U-shaped sectional sofa is toddler-tested with the perfect bounce for a superhero. The fabric durability for your two year old chef. And has a sturdy base for your in-home jungle gym. Wallaroo’s is committed to making high quality furniture designed with your family in mind. And that is true, wherever you live.

Reclaimed Wood Accents from India
We all know and love furniture made from reclaimed wood. Not only is it gorgeous and unique, but it’s also environmentally sustainable. At Wallaroo’s, we care about all of our homes, including the planet we all live on. That’s why we source our beautiful reclaimed wood accents directly from India. Just check these out! Preparing for this blog, we dug deep into history to learn as much as we could about the reclamation process. We learned lots of exciting things we’d like to share with you. As we often do, we started with an examination of the language itself. A Brief History of Reclaimed Wood The word reclaim has a long, vibrant history in the history of our language. From the Latin “re” (back) + “clamare” (to shout), the word reclamare meant “to cry out against”. A protest. The word took a brief detour in France, where Falconers used the word reclamer for the shout used to call back their birds of prey. From this context of man’s control over the vital, natural world, the word came into Middle English. At this time, to reclaim was to “redeem from a state of vice” or “to tame, civilize.” In a relatively short period of time, reclamare came full circle. Originally a word to denote protest, it evolved into a word used for man to exert dominion over the natural world. You’re likely already familiar with the most recent twist in the reclamation saga: reclaimed hardwood. It is the process of reclaiming human debris from nature. This cleans up the environment Earth while responsibly sourcing building materials. Beginning in the 1970s, reclaiming hardwood didn’t see notoriety until the 1990s. The movement gained traction amidst the early underpinnings of the climate movement and the declining quality of new lumber. By the 90s, as the practice of proper waste disposal and deconstruction became industry standard, reclaiming lumber became the standard. The Reclaiming and Restoration Process The reclamation process is traditionally associated with the derelict barn. However, there are many other sources for reclaimed wood, including wood waste generated from manufacturing furniture. There’s also the process of water reclamation, which allows folks to source wood from sinker logs, forests that have been submerged for decades, or even rare and exotic pieces of wood floating along the river looking for a new home. Reclaimed Accents from India at Wallaroo’s Wallaroo’s struggled to find high-quality accent furniture that fits into our line of unique furniture for years. We weren’t interested in selling particleboard at a premium and we always have our eye on responsibly sourced materials. Nathan was stoked when he found a family-owned business in Jaipur India with an eye for teal and quality that amazed us. We finally had a line of reclaimed wood accents! Three years and countless containers of this product later, our love has grown and these accents from India are a mainstay at Wallaroo’s Furniture and Mattresses. Why? Because each of these pieces is truly one-of-a-kind. Handcrafted from responsibly sourced reclaimed hardwood and metals, these accent pieces are worthy of being a family heirloom. They’ve already survived, in some cases, hundreds of years in the wilderness! We’re sure they’ll survive a few more in your living room. Imagine having a responsibly sourced cabinet like this in your home! In addition to furnishing your home with a truly unique Accent from India, you’ll also do your part to curb deforestation, support two family-owned businesses, and invest in a beautiful piece of furniture your family will cherish for generations to come. Check out our unique catalog of Accents from India to get a taste for our selection. Then come on down to your nearest Wallaroo’s Furniture and Mattresses to select the perfect piece for your home. Wherever you live.

This large, blanket-soft sectional is exactly what comes to mind when I think of getting cozy during the holidays. With pillow-topped armrests and the chenille microfiber upholstery, it’s like sleeping in a bed when you lounge on the Barbados.
