Vintage inspiration is not going anyway and we all know what goes around comes around in fashion, furniture and life. According to a Furniture Today article, 66% of U.S. homes now have resale home goods and furniture.
Whether it’s a hand me down, a perfectly curated vintage score from a place like The Green Ant in Salt Lake City or something you found {gasp} on the side of the road, no millennial or Gen Zs are living in a fresh from the showroom livingspace. Wallaroo’s acknowledges and LOVES this fact. We love our customers’ proclivity for a mix of vintage and new, so our co-owner (and former vintage purist) has put together some top tips in a series that we like to call Vintage-Inspo-Meets-Walla-New!
Mix Vintage with Modern
Bailee’s first tip is to mix a vintage-inspired sofa with a truly vintage loveseat or chair. “When I met Nathan, my downtown Spokane two bedroom loft apartment was pretty sparsely furnished with all second hand furniture. Are pallets pilfered from the back of a grocery store considered second hand? If so, my guest bedroom had a second hand bed frame made of pallets and a gorgeous waterfall vanity,” stated Bailee.
What her apartment was lacking was ANY touch of new furniture. Her Goodwill couches were cheaply made in the first place and after spending a summer in her friends garage, while she road tripped across the west coast they were well-loved by her friend’s cat and destroyed by the elements. At that point she noticed she needed to replace it.
Find Vintage Décor
Secondly, vintage entertainment items, such as cocktail carts, a colorful beverage fridge or placing some colorful barstools at the back of your vintage-inspired couch! When Bailee was in college, she shared an apartment with her friend Meghan, who was the closest thing to Monica from Friends. Her mix of vintage and new furniture inspired Bailee’s love of vintage entertaining items. Petite champagne flutes, golden bar art and crystal liquor carafes set the vibe for her dinner parties.
Also, we absolutely love what Lauren Wynn did with her studio space and market! The vintage-inspired fridge, bar stools at the back of her sofa and unique decor give the space a really cool, vintage vibe.
Find your Inspiration
Third, Wallaroo’s recently furnished a short term rental project in Spokane, Washington with a unique and vintage rock and roll vibe. Our big picture inspiration was the Ace Hotel in New York with a professional feel. Short term rentals are often used for longer term corporate housing or business trips. Our friends at 4 Degrees Real Estate used fetching design elements, such as large bedroom murals of 60s and 70s musicians with the full array of Pendleton National Parks blankets (a nod to the “on the road rocker” lifestyle) and even en suite record players that blended in nicely with the mid-century decor. We loved this blog from A Vintage Splendor that really sets off a great Palm Springs (mid century thrifting Meca) look.
The Vintage World is Vast!
Lastly, pop on a vintage frock, blouse or top, take a seat and snap some pics. There is more to the vintage world than furniture! To set the look of your vintage inspired home on fire, start the hunt for some vintage clothes, caftans or hats.
